I am the Dowager Countess of Grantham. Our estate, Downton Abbey, had been entailed on my son the Earl of Grantham's cousin. We always hoped that Lord Grantham's cousin's son would marry Lord Grantham's daughter, Lady Mary, but we had the most terrible news. Both Lord Grantham's cousin and his son were on the Titanic when it sunk. We believe Downton should go to Lady Mary, but the estate is entailed to Lord Grantham's third cousin, who talks of "jobs" and "weekends"! And Lord Grantham will not fight the entail because he believes it's hopeless. Putting it bluntly, do you think Lord Grantham has thrown in the towel prematurely?Sincerely,

I see no occasion for entailing estates from the female line. It was not thought necessary in Sir Lewis de Bourgh's family. My estate at Rosings is not entailed and will happily go to my daughter, Miss de Bourgh. Daughters are never of so much consequence to a father, so we need not be surprised why Lord Grantham will not fight the entail. Though your Downton Abbey cannot not possibly match the splendor of Rosings Park, I suggest that you go to London and fix it yourself. You will have to change horses at Bromley, of course - mention my name at the bell and they will attend you.
