Favorite Period Drama Theme Songs

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

One of the things that I enjoy while I watch a period drama miniseries or movie is the music. The song that probably stays in your head the longest is the theme song. Since miniseries have more than one episode and the theme song is played at the beginning of each, it is probably the piece of music that we hear the most while watching a miniseries. Here are some of my favorite theme songs:

Pride and Prejudice (1995) Theme

I love this song! It's bouncy, yet smooth flowing. It definately captures the tone of Pride and Prejudice: how it's a light hearted story; there may be a few spots that are more serious, but it comes back to the light tone of the story.

Little Dorrit (2008) Theme

I'm currently taking a piano class, and I've been trying to learn this theme song on my own. It's a sad song, but it sweet at the same time, kind of like how Little Dorrit is: the story has a lot of sad parts to it, but at the same time, Amy is such a sweet character that once we get to the end (SPOILER) we're happy that everything turned out alright for her. (End of Spoiler)

Downton Abbey (2010) Theme

I just can't stop listening to this song! There's just something about it that makes you want to loop the song so it just plays over and over again! It's a very pretty song.

Emma (2009) Theme

This song always makes me feel happy! There's just such a light tone to it and a quick pace. I love it!

What would you think of occasional posts like this with some nice period drama music in them? Leave a comment!

Some Tournament Stuff

Sunday, April 24, 2011

Just a couple of things about the tournament and some announcements in general.

1. No Review This Week
I've been busy with Easter coming up and since it's getting towards the end of the year with school I've been busy with school too. Next week, however, there will be a review!

2. Some more buttons!
I made a couple of more buttons if you would like to put them on your blog to tell everyone about the Period Drama Hero Tournament. I made an Elizabeth Gaskell button for fans of Elizabeth Gaskell and a Downton Abbey button due to the popularity of Downton Abbey.

To see the other buttons, go to the Period Drama Hero Tournament page!

3. Sneak Peeks of Contestants
During this week before the tournament, every two days, I am going to release a contestant for the tournament. I am only going to release three contestants. Some heroes are pretty obvious that I've included (such as I have them in a button), so I'll try to announce heroes that I haven't already mentioned. So for today, a contestant in the Period Drama Hero Tournament is:

Osborne Hamley from Wives and Daughters

So stay tuned for more contestants being revealed!

He is Risen!

Happy Easter, everyone!

The Last Supper

The King's Speech Released on DVD today!

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

The King's Speech was released today, April 19th, on Blu-Ray and DVD. I got my copy today!

I highly recommend this movie! Colin Firth was excellent in this movie! The version that was released today is the original R rated version (for language in two scenes). I don't know if they are going to release the PG-13 version on DVD, which edited out some of the swears.

Period Drama Hero Tournament Announcement

If you haven't voted in the poll at the side about the last three positions in the contest, do so now!

I still have to make some more preparations, but I did do enough to finally announce a date for the start of the tournament! The Period Drama Hero Tournament will begin on May 1st.

Period Drama Hero Tournament!

We've come to know them... We've come to root for them... We hope they end up with the girl of their dreams (or that the girl will accept them)... Or maybe not, but they are still honorable and we love them anyways!

This is "The Period Drama Hero Tournament"! Where our favorite heroes and other male main characters from various period dramas compete for the coveted gold metal and title of "Favorite Hero".

Due to high demand and the success of the "Period Drama Heroine Tournament", the Hero tournament is underway!

How it Works: Readers of Elegance of Fashion will vote in polls. The polls will last one week, and once they're over, the winners from each poll will go onto the next round. The first round starts out with 50 heroes with 25 polls to vote in: each poll will have two heroes to pick from. Second round - 25 heroes and 8 polls (the hero with the most votes in Round 1 will have immunity in Round 2: if there are two heroes tied for that spot, they will be randomly selected). After the voting for Round 2 closes, there will be a three day poll to decide a wild card contestant from the already eliminated contestants. Third - 10 heroes (including the wild card) and 5 polls; each poll will have two heroes in it. Fourth Round - one poll with the top four of the five contestants will move on. Fifth - 2 polls and 4 heroes. Lastly, the final round will decide who wins "The Period Drama Hero Tournament"!

Review: The Ten Commandments

Monday, April 18, 2011

I remember watching this as a kid. I would sit with my mom and my sister and we would watch this classic movie. This is especially perfect for around Easter time, since at the Last Supper, Jesus was celebrating Passover with his disciples. You can usually find this movie playing on TV around Easter time. This is the perfect time to review this movie since it is getting so close to Easter.
Box Art of Newly Released Blu-Ray version

Synopsis
The Ten Commandments follows the story of Moses that was told in the Old Testament of the Bible. In Egypt, the pharaoh decrees a law that says that the male children of the Isrealite slaves must be killed. Yochabel, a slave, puts her new born son in a basket and sends him afloat on the Nile so that he may have a chance at life. The baby is found by Bithiah, the daughter of the pharaoh. Bithiah, a childless widow takes the baby out of the basket, names him Moses, and raises him as her son. Moses grows up in the palace of the pharaoh and becomes a prince of Egypt. When Moses finds out about his heritage and after he kills the master builder to save a slave named Joshua (John Derek), Moses leaves Egypt...
Characters
There are many well known actors and actresses in this movie. This is one of Charlton Heston's well known roles and he is remembered very well as being Moses. You might also recognize Edward G. Robinson, Yvonne De Carlo (The Munsters), John Derek, and Yul Brynner (The King and I).
Moses (Charlton Heston) with the stone tablets that have
the Ten Commandments written on them. Joshua (John Derek)
stands behind him.

All the actors and actresses acted very well. Charlton Heston was absolutely wonderful as Moses! Could there have been a more suited actor for Moses? I hope that this movie is never remade (which seems to be the Hollywood trend at the moment), because no one could beat Charlton Heston as Moses. I don't think that anyone could (or should) reproduce this movie: all the actors and actresses were so well suited for their roles.

In today's movies, there might be a few extras that are replicated a bunch of times to give the appearance of a large crowd. Not with The Ten Commandments. Every person you see in a crowd is real. According to IMDB, "At least 14,000 extras and 15,000 animals were used, during the production and acting, as the movie was being filmed." It's breathtaking all the people that were in this movie!

Scenery
The Parting of the Red Sea
Shot partly on location in Egypt, the scenery is wonderful. Most of the movies during this time were shot on sound stages and sets. While there were probably some sets for indoor scenes, the outdoor scenes were obviously not shot on a sound stage. The graphics are also amazing for it's time. Between the pillar of fire, the burning bush, and not to mention the parting of the Red Sea (which looked so real, by the way), the special effects were ahead of its time.

Costumes
Pharaoh's palace. Next to Pharaoh on his right is Rameses
(Yul Brynner), and on his left sitting is Nefretiri (Anne Baxter).
The costumes varied greatly as far as finery goes. The Israelites obviously would have old clothes that were worn from the work that they did. The Egyptians had new, fancy, very fine clothing. It is hard to compare the two since they are both vastly different. The Egyptian costumes did look nice, though.

Music
The music is very powerful! If you would like to hear samples, I think this is a link to the CD page at Amazon where you can listen to samples.

Bithiah and baby Moses
Overall: 5/5
I highly recommend this movie! It's a definite classic and well worth watching. If you have a chance to watch it on Blu-Ray, watch it! It was remastered very well, indeed! The colors really pop out and are very striking.

The Ten Commandments is available on DVD and Blu-Ray. It runs for 220 minutes.
